Cary's fast-growing subdivisions and established neighborhoods sit on red clay soil and wooded lots where mature oaks, pines, and hickories define the landscape. Homeowners here know that fences take a beating from weather, clay drainage, and the constant pressure of property line disputes in master-planned communities where HOA rules govern everything from picket height to post spacing.

Raleigh Fence Contractors has served Cary and the Raleigh area since 2013. We install and repair wood, vinyl, chain link, and ornamental metal fences, plus gates and automatic driveway systems. Our crews understand Cary's terrain, its HOA architectural standards, and the specific challenges of building on clay that holds water after heavy rain. We show up on time, do the work right, and leave your property clean.

Fence Work in Cary (27513)

Cary's housing stock ranges from 1980s in-town neighborhoods to newer suburban subdivisions with deed restrictions and HOA rules on nearly every street. Most lots are wooded and sloped. The red clay drains slowly, which means untreated wood posts fail at the ground line within a few years if not set properly in concrete and kept clear of standing water. Sloped terrain makes the decision between racked and stepped installation a real one on most jobs, not an exception. Chain link and vinyl hold up better in wet clay than wood, but wood fencing remains popular for privacy, and when it's done right with pressure-treated pine or cedar posts set deep in concrete, it lasts.

We've been installing and repairing fences in Cary since 2013. We know the soil, the slopes, the HOA approval process, and which materials work best for the long term. We work from your existing survey and install on the line you identify. For projects at or above $40,000, we say up front that a licensed general contractor is required by North Carolina law.

How a Fence Job Works in Cary

We start with a free on-site assessment. We walk your property, look at the terrain, check for slopes and drainage issues, and talk through your goals. If you have an HOA, we discuss what materials and heights are permitted. We measure the fence line, note any obstacles, and explain what the job will cost and how long it will take.

Before any digging, we call 811 for a utility locate. North Carolina law requires it, and it protects you and us. Once utilities are marked, we set posts in concrete at the correct spacing, then install rails, pickets, boards, or mesh depending on the fence type. On sloped lots, we decide whether to rack the fence (panels follow the slope) or step it (panels stay level). We use galvanized hardware for wood and vinyl, powder-coated or stainless for metal, and tension bands and stretcher bars for chain link to keep everything square and tight.

When the work is done, we remove all debris, clean up the site, and walk through with you to make sure everything meets your expectations. You're left with a finished fence that will hold up to Cary's weather and clay.

Pricing depends on the fence type, the length of the run, terrain, and access. Chain link starts at $15 per linear foot. Wood privacy fence runs from $25 per linear foot. Vinyl and PVC start at $36 per linear foot. Aluminum and ornamental iron start at $40 per linear foot. Pool fencing is installed to meet local pool barrier codes and starts at $32 per linear foot. Fence repair begins at $440. Gate installation and repair start at $465. Automatic driveway gates start at $2,800. Fence removal and replacement start at $2,300. The best way to know what your job costs is to call us for a free estimate. We'll come out, assess the work, and give you a honest price. Call (919) 873-3812 or reach out online anytime.

Why do wood fence posts fail so quickly on Cary properties?
Cary sits on red clay that drains slowly. After heavy rain, water pools around the base of posts and stays there for days. Untreated or poorly installed posts rot at the ground line within a few years. The solution is to set posts deep in concrete, use pressure-treated pine or cedar, and ensure the ground slopes away from the fence line so water runs off. We do this as standard practice.
Do I need permission from my HOA before installing a fence in Cary?
Almost certainly yes. Nearly every street in Cary has deed restrictions or HOA architectural standards that govern fence height, material, color, and setback. Before you call us, review your HOA documents or contact your HOA directly. Once you know what's permitted, we'll work with those rules and handle the coordination if needed. We've done this hundreds of times in Cary subdivisions.
What's the difference between racked and stepped fencing on a slope?
Racked fencing follows the slope of the land, so the top and bottom of the panels angle upward as the ground rises. Stepped fencing keeps the panels level, creating a stair-step effect as the terrain climbs. Racked looks cleaner and is easier to install on gradual slopes. Stepped is better on steep slopes because it avoids large gaps at the bottom. We assess your lot and recommend the best approach for your terrain.
What happens if a tree branch or storm damage brings down part of my fence?
Call us right away at (919) 873-3812. We offer free damage assessments for storm-damaged fences. We'll document what happened, explain what needs to be repaired or replaced, and give you an honest price. We can help you gather information for an insurance claim if you have coverage. We don't make promises about what your insurance will cover, but we'll be clear about what the damage is and what it costs to fix.
Can you install a fence if I don't have a survey?
We work from your existing survey and install on the line you identify. If you don't have a survey and you're unsure where your property line is, we recommend hiring a licensed land surveyor to mark it. Once the line is established, we'll install the fence exactly where you want it. This protects you and your neighbor and keeps disputes from starting.
Are your crews fully insured?
Yes. We carry general liability and workers' compensation insurance. We're AFA Member Installers through the American Fence Association, and we show up on time, do quality work, and stand behind it. For projects at or above $40,000, a licensed North Carolina general contractor is required.
What if my fence is leaning or sagging? Do I need to replace it?
Not always. If a post has shifted or a rail has loosened, repair is often the right answer. We assess the damage, explain whether a repair will hold or whether replacement is the better spend, and give you an honest recommendation. Fence post repair and replacement starts at $440. If the fence is sound but just needs tightening or bracing, we can often fix it for less than replacement costs.
